Growing in Unity – Day 2 – Pet Sympathy Cards

Welcome to Day 2. Today I have two sympathy cards for you. These two cards were made for two of my great-nieces (sisters). Their family had a run of bad pet luck earlier this year, and they each lost one of their most cherished pets. Both pets were lost within a couple weeks of each other.

The first card I made was for a kitten that was bottle fed and treated like a true baby for the duration of its short life. I used Unity Stamp Company’s Part of Us set designed by Phyllis Harris. I stamped the image on watercolor paper and started coloring it using Nicholson’s Peerless Transparent Watercolor paints. I have the Travel Palette.

After I colored the entire background scene, I decided to leave the cat and dog uncolored. My Crazy Craft Chicks agreed, saying it made the animals pop.

I asked a very reliable source what my great-niece’s favorite color was at the time (you know favorite colors change often for kids). So, I mounted the image to a teal card base and stamped the kit sentiment on the inside.

The next card was needed just a couple weeks later for the little sister’s puppy. I used Unity’s Muddy Paws Background stamp and used Vintage Photo Distress Ink to make the “mud.” I stamped the dog and cat image from Unity’s January 2019 Kit of the Month and the sentiment from Itty Bitty Dogs Leave Pawprints.

Next I used oval dies to cut out the cat and dog and for a black layer behind them. I fussy cut around the sentiment and then layered everything on a pink card base (pink is her current favorite color). On the inside, I stamped a sentiment from Peace, Courage & Memories.

Hopefully these pet sympathy cards will give you some ideas and inspiration. Sympathy cards are the most difficult for me to make, and pet sympathy cards for two beautiful little girls was definitely a challenge.

  1. I am sure they will appreciate those wonderful cards even if it is for such a sad occasion. I do like the dog and cat uncolored. It makes them seem sort of other worldly.

  2. Such sweet pet sympathy cards! I hadn’t seen that paw print background used much but I love what you’ve done with it.

  3. Your sympathy cards are so sweet and the recipients will so appreciate your thoughtfulness I’m sure. I love that you have Craft chick friends, so nice and fun too. The first card is awesome with the dog and cat not colored. They really do stand out. I love the background you created for the second one!

  4. Both cards are awesome! I’ve had to make far too many of these sort of cards lately and now I’ve got some different inspiration for the next ones.

  5. I’m sure your cards brought peace to the girls during a difficult time. I loved the cards and your creativity!

  6. Darling cards. Love the rainbow scene as well as the paw print BG.
I’m sure your cards were appreciated so much.

  7. I’m so sorry to hear of your great nieces losing their furry friends. I really like how you left the animals black and white.

  8. As both my cat and my dog are now seniors, I think about how much they are a huge part of my life, especially since this pandemic began. Pets are family and losing them is hard. I love the sensitivity of both of these beautiful cards.

  9. Sweet cards for some awful circumstances. I love how you added the special touch of using their favorite colors for the card bases.

  10. My favorite niece lost her fur baby (?a great dane?) on Christmas day…it is hard for me to figure out what to do since I don’t have any pet memories myself for over 40 years…I like that the images were left uncolored and ghost-like…. definitely an inspiration! Loved them both!!!
